Holden leaned against the counter and repeatedly rasped his knuckles over his jaw while he waited for the coffee maker to sputter to a stop. The aroma was mouth-watering—the quality of the coffee so much better at home than on the fishing boat, Cure the Blues.

To the crew he’d fished with, “curing the blues” meant searching for the biggest net of fish. But for Holden, he’d truly started living again once he stepped off the boat. Knowing he’d soon be with Laurel had eliminated any melancholy he’d felt the past months.

He’d never expected to be fighting for her in this way.

Why hadn’t he demanded to have nights with her?

Shooting another glance at the wall clock, Holden yanked the full coffee pot out before the liquid was finished trickling out. He filled his mug and then slammed the pot back into place.

Jens had more time alone with her than Holden did. During the day, Holden was so busy working the farm, he could barely find a minute to show Laurel how important she was to him. And after his fuck-up of not communicating in the past, he was determined to show her now.

Gingerly, he took a sip of the scalding coffee. His stomach rumbled, but he didn’t have the energy to make a big breakfast. He’d have to settle for toast and hope that Laurel cooked a nice lunch again.

The drone of Jens’s truck engine grated on Holden’s last nerve when the man finally arrived home. Holden pivoted to face the door, raring for a fight even before dawn.

He took another sip of coffee, enjoying the burn all the way to his stomach. When the screen door squeaked, he set down his cup and clenched his fists.

A dark, shining head popped through the door, and Holden started. “Laurel.”

She met his gaze with a sleepy smile. His stomach knotted. Damn, if only he could see that smile every day when he woke up. Why did Jens get that privilege? Stupid coin.

She padded through the entryway and right into Holden’s embrace. He flexed his arms around her and lifted her off her feet. Giving a little squeal, she snaked her arms behind his neck and held on, all soft, curvaceous woman. A woman who’d just crawled from a bed she shared with Jens.

Holden noted the scuff of a boot on the floor and looked up. Jens stood in the doorway, watching them. Some strange emotion lived on his face. It twisted his mouth and made his eyes spark, but Holden had no idea what might be going on in Jens’s mind.

At this moment, he didn’t care.

“What are you doing here so early, baby?” he murmured against Laurel’s hair.

Jens continued to gaze at them, and his expression turned thoughtful.

“I wanted to come up with Jens.” She withdrew slightly from Holden’s arms and twisted to face Jens.

Electricity charged the room as Laurel and Jens gazed at each other. Though Holden couldn’t see her expression, he saw Jens’s, and it was enough to tell him that something had changed between those two.
